Essie Davis’ birth took place on 7 January 1970 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia as Esther Davis. She is the daughter of George Davis, a local artist, and Mary Davis. She is not the only child of her parents and has six other siblings.
Davis was educated at Clarence High School and attended Rosny College after graduating high school. She also enrolled at the University of Tasmania and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. She graduated from the latter with a degree in Performing Arts (Acting) in 1992.

At the University of Tasmania, Essie Davis was a member of the Old Nick Company. Her professional career began in 1993 with Bell Shakespeare’s production of Romeo and Juliet. This was followed by performances in Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, and The Taming of the Shrew.
Her film career began in 1995 with the film Dad and Dave: On Our Selection followed by hit movies The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, The Sound of One Hand Clapping, and Girl with a Pearl Earring.
