Who is Sara Gilbert?

Sara Gilbert is an actress by profession and American by nationality. She is well known for starring in Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory, and co-host of The Talk.

Sara Gilbert’s birth took place on January 29, 1975, in Santa Monica, California, USA. She was born Sara Rebecca Abeles to father Harold Abeles and mother Barbara Cowan. After her parents divorced, her mother married Warren Cowan.

She took the last name Gilbert for her mother’s first husband Paul Gilbert in 1984. She is not the only child of her parents and has four older half-siblings- half-sisters Melissa Gilbert, and Patrice Graves, and half-brothers Jonathan Gilbert, and Joseph Abeles. Her stepsister is Claudia Cowan and her grandfather is Harry Crane, a comedy writer.

Education, Ethnicity

For education, Sara Gilbert attended The Buckley School and later graduated from Yale University in 1997 with honors with a major in art with an emphasis on photography. 

Her ethnicity is Ashkenazi-Jewish.

Sara Gilbert – Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Wife, Children

She dated fellow actor Johnny Galecki while she was a teenager but later realized that she was actually a lesbian and broke up with her boyfriend. Sara Gilbert began a romantic relationship with her girlfriend Allison Adler, a TV producer in 2001.

The couple has two children together- son Levi Hank Gilbert-Adler was born to Adler in October 2004 and daughter Sawyer Jane Gilbert-Adler was born to Gilbert in August 2007. Both were with the help of sperm donors. But after more than 10 years of dating the couple broke up in 2011.

She went on to date Linda Perry, a songwriter, music producer, and former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman. The couple announced their engagement in April 2013 and married on March 30, 2014. 

She and her wife became parents to their son Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry on February 28, 2015 (born to Gilbert with the help of a sperm donor). However, the marriage was short-lived as they filed for divorce in 2019, which was finalized on October 15, 2021.

Sara Gilbert – Career

Early Career

Sara Gilbert began her career as an actress at a young age. After minor appearances in TV movies and commercials for Kool-Aid, she landed the role of Darlene Conner in the TV series Roseanne at the age of 13. 

She portrayed the role from 1988 to 1997 and also wrote a fourth-season episode story called Don't Make Me Over. 

Her contribution was considered so important that the show’s producers managed her storyline and shooting schedule so that she could study at Yale University.

In films Sara Gilbert has starred in Poison Ivy (1992), Light It Up (1999), High Fidelity (2000), Laws of Attraction (2004), etc. 

She has also portrayed roles in the TV series Sudie and Simpson (1990), Welcome to New York (2000-2001), 24 (2002), ER (2004-2007), The Class (2006-2007), The Big Bang Theory, Bad Teacher (2014), Living Biblically (2018). 

Sara Gilbert reprised the role of Darlene Conner on The Conners in 2018.
